由香港經日本、檀香山，獨自飛往美國三藩市佛教講堂。
The Venerable Master traveled alone from Hong Kong by way of Japan and Hawaii to the San Francisco Buddhist Lecture Hall.
1962-1968
半隱遁時期，自稱「墓中僧」。開講《金剛經》、《六祖壇經》等。
During this period of semi-seclusion, the Venerable Master called himself “a monk in a grave.” Nonetheless, he lectured on the Vajra Sutra, the Sixth Patriarch’s Platform Sutra, and others.
1968
六月，為西方大學生，開辦「暑期楞嚴講修班」。
Beginning in June, the Venerable Master hosted the Shurangama Summer Lecture and Cultivation Session, which was attended by a group of American college students.

十一月，開講《法華經》。
Beginning in November, the Venerable Master began a lecture series on the entire Dharma Flower Sutra.
1969
有五位美國人在上人座下出家，後於臺灣基隆海會寺受具足戒，創美國佛教史始有僧相之紀錄。
Five American monastic disciples went to Jilung, Taiwan to receive full ordaination at Haihui Monastery. These five Americans formed the initial Sangha led by the Venerable Master. For the first time in the history of Buddhism in America, a Sangha of Americans existed.

成立三藩市金山禪寺。
The Venerable Master founded the Gold Mountain Dhyana Monastery in San Francisco.

十一月至次年二月，舉行十四個星期的禪七。
From November l970 through February l971, the Venerable Master hosted a fourteen-week meditation retreat.

創辦《金剛菩提海》月刊。
The Venerable Master founded the Vajra Bodhi Sea, a monthly journal of orthodox Buddhism.

開講華嚴系列，涵蓋《華嚴經疏序》、《華嚴經疏》及《華嚴經》，前後共九年。
The Venerable Master began a nine-year lecture series that included the Preface, Prologue, and the entire Flower Adornment Sutra.

九月，傳授西方首次的三壇大戒於金山禪寺。
In September, the Venerable Master hosted
the first Threefold Ordination Ceremony in the West at the Gold Mountain Dhyana Monastery.

成立國際譯經學院。
The Venerable Master founded the International Translation Institute.

美籍出家弟子恒具、恒由兩行者，為祈世界和平，由三藩市三步一拜至西雅圖，創美國佛教史第一次三步一拜的先例。
To pray for world peace, his American monastic disciples, Heng Ju and Heng Yo, began a three steps and one bow pilgrimage from San Francisco to Seattle. This was the first “three steps one bow” pilgrimage in the history of Buddhism in America.

接受善信捐獻西雅圖的菩提達摩中心。
The Venerable Master accepted the donation of Bodhidharma Center in Seattle.

十一月至次年一月，率領弟子應邀前往臺、港、印度、新、馬、越等地弘法。
From November 20, l974 through January 12, l975, upon invitation, the Venerable Master led a delegation to propagate the Dharma in Taiwan, Hong Kong, India, Singapore, Vietnam, and other places.

成立育良小學及法界教大學。
The Venerable Master founded the Instilling Goodness Elementary School and the Dharma Realm Buddhist University.
1976
購置北加州萬佛聖城。
The Venerable Master purchased the site for the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas in northern California.

八月，首次於萬佛聖城傳授第二屆三壇大戒。
In August, the Venerable Master hosted the second Threefold Ordination Ceremony, the first to be held at the City.

成立洛杉磯金輪聖寺。
The Venerable Master founded the Gold Wheel Monastery in Los Angeles.
1978
七月至九月，應東南亞各地佛教界邀請，率團赴馬、新、泰、港各地弘法。
From July to September, upon invitation, the Venerable Master led a delegation to propagate the Dharma in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Hong Kong.

育良小學遷至萬佛聖城。
Instilling Goodness Elementary School moved to the City.
